The #Booksmut trend: How reading can spice up your sex life

I've noticed an exciting trend sweeping across social media and into bedrooms worldwide: the resurgence of erotic fiction. Platforms like TikTok, particularly the #BookTok community, have reignited interest in "spicy" reads, with hashtags like #SpicyBookTok and #Smut garnering millions of posts.

But why is this genre experiencing such a boom, especially among women, trans and non-binary folk?

Here are some of my observations:

1. Diversity in content and creators

Unlike traditional pornography, which often caters to a narrow demographic, today's erotic fiction embraces diversity. Platforms like Dipsea feature significant contributions from queer writers and people of colour, offering a wider range of perspectives and experiences.

2. Focus on female pleasure

Many of my clients express frustration with mainstream porn, which often neglects the complexities of female arousal and pleasure. It is almost always shot through the male gaze. Erotic fiction, on the other hand, allows readers to explore desire and sexuality in ways that resonate more deeply with their own experiences.

3. Imagination and autonomy

While society has long pushed the narrative that men are more visual and women more imaginative in their sexual responses, I believe this is largely due to gendered socialisation. Erotic fiction gives readers/listeners the freedom to envision scenarios that truly excite them, rather than being limited to someone else's visual interpretation.

4. Positive impact on sex lives

Research suggests that women who consume erotic fiction have significantly more sex than those who don't. In my practice, I've seen how these "spicy" reads can spark desire, encourage sexual exploration, and improve communication between partners.

5. Escapism in uncertain times

Its understandable that the popularity of erotic fiction surges during periods of global stress. Much like the increased interest in online pornography during pandemic lockdowns, today's erotic fiction boom offers a much-needed escape and a guarantee of a satisfying ending.

It’s great to see people finding joy, pleasure, and connection through erotic books. Whether you're new to the genre or a longtime fan, I encourage you to explore the diverse world of erotic fiction and see how it might enhance your own sexual wellbeing.

Remember, there's no shame in seeking pleasure and fantasising. Embrace your desires, have fun, and always prioritise consent and safety in your real-life sexual encounters.
